4.0 Quality Control Procedures
4.1 Sampling and testing
The materials Engineer would take the samples from the excavated materials to check whether those materials are suitable or unsuitable for backfilling and the results would be forwarded to the Engineer for approval.
Excavated Soil:
Samples of soil would be taken from the locations where the roadway excavation is carried out and those samples would be placed in a polythene bag providing identification tag. All required tests would be carried out in the materials testing laboratory according to the frequencies specified in the technical specification to confirm whether the material is suitable for back filling or not.
4.2 Inspection Check list
To ensure that the all activities being performed with the expected quality, an inspection check list would be filled by the Site Engineer in case of pre construction, during construction and post construction. The inspection check list shall include the specific requirements, safety and environmental measures.
4.3 Dimension Control
Road way excavation would be carried out according to the designed cross sections. The required slope and length of the excavation would be properly maintained during construction. The center line of the road would be checked before start the work and also the center line would be referenced. Those requirements would be checked with the inspection check list.
5.0 Methodology
• Road way excavation shall consist of all the required excavation within the limits of the Right of Way including hard rock and soft rock.
• The excavation would be carried out by using a back–hoe loader or wheel back-hoe loader. Back-hoe loader is much applicable, where the road way excavation is identified in higher elevation.
• All suitable material exposed by the excavation would be stock pilled in a suitable location with a well drain facilities and these material would be used in the construction work. The unsuitable material as classified by the Engineer, would be disposed to an approved disposal area, by Dump Trucks.
• In disposal areas, the unsuitable materials would be spread using wheel loaders or by manual means in a manner not to interfere with the drainage pattern of the area under supervision of a Forman.
